The internet always seems to bring to life interesting discussions in relation to 'console wars'. For the longest, it's always been system X vs system Y, and it's never made much sense to me. At least, not as a consumer.
As a consumer (and advocate of having fun, in general) it doesn't matter which system I own. I just want to play the games I want to play. It shouldn't matter who made the system, or which brand I've been 'loyal' to the most.
Admittedly, I'm guilty of doing this to a degree. When the original xbox first came out, I already had quite a bit of disdain for Microsoft. I knew about their monopoly suits that they lost, and I knew about restrictions they placed on open system software like Java and Netscape.
When it first came out, I wanted nothing to do with it because of Microsoft. Then I tried to reason with myself that there were no games that I wanted on it. I also did the same thing with PC gaming, then again, at the time I had little access to internet from my own computer, and I did not have a capable graphics card.
Then the Xbox 360 released and I felt the same way. I found myself defending the PS3 over the 360 even though I knew that the xbox had some advantages over the playstation. Eventually, I decided to purchase a 360 because it had a decent library of games I wanted to play. Oddly enough, I own very few shooters and very few sports titles (which used to be my criticisms of the system).
Over time, I've started to realize that it doesn't matter which system it's on - as long as it's fun. A console IMO is defined by its library of games. That's what makes it 'good' or bad. Even that is relatively objective.
I think there will always be console wars. There always have been, needlessly. Whether it's Commodore 64 vs Amiga, Sega vs Nintendo, Sony vs Nintendo, iOS vs Android, or Microsoft vs Sony.
It's a competitive business, but we're not the businessmen. We're the consumers.
I think I can understand the root of the problem, though. For instance, I was hanging out with some friends back in early 2007 when the PS3 was still brand new. They were saying how it was dead in the water, and was going to be discontinued soon because it sucked.
I found myself defending the PS3 at this point, and probably sounding like the rest of the people on the internet who defend Sony at every whim. It got to the point where I felt like I had to defend my choice of console way too much.
I also did this when I first got my N64, and when I first got my iPad. These systems were new, and they were expensive. People tend to be wary of expensive things, and sometimes shun it. (Except in the case of Neogeo, not sure why). Perhaps I was being too insecure about my purchasing decisions. Perhaps they were just jealous. I don't know.
How does everyone else feel about this? Do you think console wars are healthy for a debate, or are they pretty much the most pointless thing ever?
Do you actively 'hate on' systems you don't own? Why or why not? Is there some sense of superiority for owning one system over the other? I'm looking for serious answers. I'm not going to judge anyone, I'm just wondering what your honest opinion is. It's ok if you honestly 'dislike' other consoles, or care about certain systems 'winning' a console war. I just want to know what sort of reasoning there is behind it.
