PSN may be down until May 31st

Sony has clarified that the PlayStation Network will not be fully operational until May 31, according to media reports.

Talking to financial website Bloomberg, Sony spokesman Shigenori Yoshida said that the company is "uncertain" as to when individual services will be restored for the PlayStation 3 and PSP.

He noted that the plan is for all services to be fully restored by May 31, nearly six weeks after the network was taken down.

Some PSN services were meant to have relaunched over the past weekend, but Sony was forced to further delay the return following a new security breach.

Elsewhere, Nick Caplin, head of communications at SCEE, said that in light of the identity theft protection being offered to PSN users in North America, users in the SCEE region will also be provided with a similar service, although he noted that this is a "very complicated process".

He revealed in a PlayStation Blog post that EU gamers will be offered four free games as part of the Welcome Back programme. PS3 users will be able to choose two games from a list of five, while PSP users will be granted two games from a list of four.

As much as I dislike Anonymous, I have to hand it to them.. If their goal from stealing this information was to make Sony lose revenue and reputation..

Strange thing is, I also believe that by May 31st or whatever date they actually bring everything back online as it was originally, all PSN customers will hold no more animosity towards Sony.

yea its getting frustrating that we have to wait for so long. i can only play single player games for so long till i get tired of it and want to play against others.

AWH so sad va. Wish i could help but im to far from you. So when you posting that video of trashing the red dead ps, lolz. I guess im lucky, my fat 80g ps3 still working, or i would be pissed off and trashing mine too.

yea it does suck having to switch but if u back up all ur stuff and have ur ps3 deactivated. then u should be good with ur accounts. and the pic below is wat im thinking of doing to my slim.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and Sony Entertainment Network International (SNEI, the company) announced it will soon begin a phased regional restoration services and Qriocity PlayStation Network, starting with activation of games, music and video.

The company has also announced a series of immediate steps to increase network security and a new customer appreciation program to thank for their patience and loyalty.

A reason for a cyber attack in the data center in San Diego, California, USA, shut SNEI services PlayStation Network and Qriocity, and conducted an extensive audit of the system involving several experts in computer security firms for several days.

Since then, the company has implemented a series of new security measures to ensure greater protection of personal information. SNEI and its associated experts have conducted extensive testing to verify the strength and quality of security services and Qriocity PlayStation Network.

Having taken these measures, and SNEI SCE plans to begin the phased restoration of these services by region shortly. The first phase includes, inter alia, the implementation of the following:

• Restoration of network gaming systems PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PSP.
• This includes titles that require verification in network and downloaded games.
• Q Music Unlimited access for subscribed users Qriocity for PS3/PSP.
• Account management and password reset.
• Access to active movie rentals PS3, PSP and Go Media.
• PlayStation Home.
• Friends List.
• Built-in chat.
Working closely with several outside firms to security, the company has implemented significant security measures to detect unauthorized activity and provide greater protection and security of personal information to consumers.

The company is also creating the position of Chief Information Security Officer, who will report directly to Shinji Hasejima, Chief Information Officer of Sony Corporation, thus adding a new position responsible for the expert and data protection, as a supplement to existing security staff information.

The new security measures implemented are (are not limited to):

• Automatic monitoring of software and configuration management to prevent and defend against possible further attacks.
• Increased levels of protection and encryption.
• Capacity building intrusion detection software within the network, unauthorized access, and patterns of unusual activity.
• Deploying additional firewalls.
The company has accelerated the plan to move the system to a new data center in a different location that has been in construction and development for months. Asdemás, the PS3 will have a mandatory system update that will require registered users to change their password before logging into the service.

As an extra security system is only possible to change the password on the PS3 where the account is activated, or via email confirmation, a definitive step to protect consumer data.

The company is conducting a thorough investigation and working hard with law enforcement to find and prosecute the perpetrators of this illegal intrusion.

Apparently the devnet is up for some developer's internal PSN usage as of yesterday. I'm guessing that means soon?

They obviously don't want to overload the servers by just flipping a switch and having it all on at once.

It is pointless to think that the 31st will be the day psn will go back up. Sony has lied to us so damn much. What can we believe. I truely think sony is just feeding us bull sh*t and is never get psn back up. But it is just my opinon.

I heard psn will have cross-game chat and a number of other new features when it finally comes back. I think Sony is taking this oppurtunity to adress the issues that users had with prior to the meltdown

So, I guess I'm trying to say is "Hang In There". The wait will be worth it!
