Mozilla Firefox Tab Candy Empty Mozilla Firefox Tab Candy

Mozilla is testing a new Firefox interface designed to tame that seemingly endless string of tabs stretching across the top of your browser – and beyond.

Known as Tab Candy, this alpha prototype provides a separate window where you can lay out your tabs like playing cards and sort them into groups. You can move tabs from group to group and sort the groups themselves, and when you select a particular group, a Firefox window opens with only those tabs loaded.

"It’s hard to keep everything straight with dozens of tabs all crammed into a little strip along the top of your browser," reads a blog post from Mozilla user interface guru Aza Raskin unveiling the project.

"We need a way to organize browsing, to see all of our tabs at once, and focus on the task at hand. In short, we need a way to get back control of our online lives."

Tab Candy is not a Firefox extension. It will eventually find its way into the browser proper. As it stands, you can try it out by downloading a test version of Firefox that includes the new interface. And Mozilla invites you to provide feedback here.

This being an alpha, there are bugs. But you can help squash them. Raskin says coders are now working to get Tab Candy into the Firefox nightly development builds.
