Sony Responds to Recent Hacks Console-hack

As you might have heard by now, the PS3 has been hacked. A group of hackers have reconstructed the tools needed to sign code the same way Sony would, making unofficial software appear to be legitimate Sony-signed code. Directly after, GeoHot — best known for hacking the iPhone — released the PS3′s root key to the internet. Following these developments, the first-ever PS3 custom firmware was created. Although it appears that the hackers have won, Sony, however, isn’t going down without a fight.

A rep for Sony explained to Edge:

“We are aware of this, and are currently looking into it,” Sony told us in a brief statement. “We will fix the issues through network updates, but because this is a security issue, we are not able to provide you with any more details.”

Sony’s attempts to thwart or patch the recent hacks may be futile, as one of the hackers from the group fail0verflow told the BBC yesterday that:

“The complete console is compromised – there is no way back.”

“The only way to fix this is to issue new hardware. Sony will have to accept this.”

The console maybe compromised, but Sony’s confidence isn’t yet and likely won’t just “accept” defeat. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments as they arise.

In an effort to retaliate against the hackers, Sony may force PSN users to pay in some kind of way.. We see Sony getting hacked all the time (Look at PS Home) and Sony always manages to pull out a patch update. However, this is different, this is a deeper hack and if Sony does find a way to patch it, another hacker will just find another Loop hole and the process will continue.

True, a lot of this started because Sony removed Linux calling it a "Breach of security" and that is another reason why Sony literally made new hardware (PS3 Slim) so that they can remove the emulator chip that allows the PS3 to play PS2 games and also they removed the option to install a secondary OS on the PS3 Slim, among other things like the memory card readers and multiple USB ports, power switch, etc.

Sony deserves to be hacked. I'm tired of them stripping features away with every SKU like backwards compatibility, other OS, usb ports, etc. They should stop trying to fight the "hackers", they're really wasting their own time. They should realize that if the PS3 is successfully hacked, it would actually increase console sales for them.

For example, the wii has been hacked. Is Nintendo hurting from it? Console sales numbers says no lol.

Xbox 360 has been hacked. Being able to play burnt games with the HD-DVD drive. Are they hurting? Doubt it, they're still in 2nd place in current gen console sales.

PSX and PS2 were hacked, and those consoles killed nintendo and the original xbox.

Pretty much every system ever has been hacked. The only places it seems to actually have a major effect is in places like Taiwan and Brazil, but that's why you see companies like Sony not even releasing the PS2 in brazil until recently.

The interesting thing about this is that it's not exactly a hack. You don't have to do anything to your system for this. People have found the digital signatures. Meaning anyone can write a program and get it digitally signed, no matter what the firmware. It's not like you're doing a thing to the system itself.

This sort of thing can't be fixed with a system update. The only way to fix it would require Sony to change the digital signatures for every game ever released or they wouldn't work anymore.

All I really care about is online cheaters! People having fun on their own time is one thing, but yeah. I'm hoping for some good emulator home brew to come out of this. Turn this thing into a real media center. Playing emus already on my ps3, but they don't look as good when stretched on a TV.
