Now that the PS3 is hacked and wide open for homebrew I started to think about what will happen. We all know piracy is inevitable. Some of you reading this right now are scheming on taking advantage and not buying games. It comes with the territory I guess. The fact of the matter is that now that the system is open much good and much evil will undoubtedly spring forth.
With all this in mind I started to think about what exactly I would want a hacked PS3 to do that it can not do now or does not do well in un-hax0red form. Here's what I came up with...
Proper Instant in Game Screenshots
There is currently a PSP screenshot homebrew app that I use for reviews on this website that does this perfectly. You press the select button and the volume button at the same time and voila. Instant screenshot gets saved to the system memory card. Simple and elegant. Now the clunky way the PS3 handles it is horrible. Many games ask you to press the laggy home button, then you must trudge to the 'photos' menu and select the 'screenshot' option. As of the latest update less than a few weeks ago MAG requires this. Other games force you to pause the game to use their photo mode and very few game have functionality that allows for screenshots to be taken while in-game.
Developers sucked at getting this right far too long and I have hopes that a talented homebrew developer takes this on and creates a simple screenshot homebrew app for PS3. Perhaps we click in both sticks or we hold L2 and the select button. Even better if we can set it ourselves. Whatever it may be we have all missed far too many great photo moments in games because the games require a pause to take a photo.
HDCP Removal
One of the things Microsoft got right from the start was not including HDCP in its HDMI signal. HDCP is copy protection. It prevents capturing video game footage over an HDMI cable. So basically much of the HD footage out there would look better if we did not have to capture it via analog component and could capture a pure digital signal. It's annoying and people who are savvy enough to capture footage can get around HDCP anyway. It's not really protecting anything. Hopefully a homebrew app is created that removed HDCP from PS3 HDMI signals.
Party Chat
Call me Captain Obvious! But yes, this was an obvious one. It's times like this when many of the things the fans cried out about can actually be addressed. If cross game chat is actually possible on the system then hopefully it will be done via homebrew app. Addressing things like this that Sony has neglected will go a long way for winning new fans of the homebrew scene.
Capture
This one is probably pie in the sky but hey the cell (processor) is supposed to be the shiznit. A game capture feature like the one in Just Cause 2 that you can control from the in game XMB would be huge. Bonus points if they can also integrate the upload straight to YouTube from the XMB. Not only that but I would also adore DVR functionality integrated into the PS3. Think of how easy it would be to make funny gifs of video game clips!
Custom Soundtracks
The PlayStation 3 now has this functionality already built into the firmware. We know this, though we also know there is a ton of older games that were never updated with custom soundtrack functionality. Also its like the wild wild west with no standard way across the platform. Some games have it in the actual game options menu, some require you to use the XMB and of course most games don't have the custom music option at all. I would like to see a custom soundtrack app that works for every game. Perhaps even making it so that so that the official XMB custom soundtrack feature works for EVERY game. No more "content does not support custom music at this time" or whatever that annoying message really happens to say. You know the message. Lets get rid of it! Also the ability to stream custom soundtrack music from the media server like you can on the Xbox 360 would be great as well.
No Disc After Install
This one is most likely a given considering that piracy will be alive and well no matter how you slice this. The other side of it is that there are many people such as myself who do have a shelf or two of legitimately purchased games that I would rather not have to load manually. The PlayStation 3 does provide owners the ability to install their own hard drives. I have a 500GB drive in my PS3 and would like to install at least 6 games that I play frequently. My Red Dead Redemption disc actually cracked in the center ring rendering it useless because of taking it in and out of the case so much. Why scratch a disc when we can install it once and run it that way? A no disc required after install option would be nice.
What do you want?
Those are a few that I thought of as this ps3 hack news hit. What homebrew functionality would you like to see?
