its great, it sucks when you start playing it, but when you keep raising levels and you get more options and more attacks, you have like a lot of things to do, you can hunt for animals, and sell their stuff, or hunt them to make your own clothes, or to get ingredients to cook, or even have them as pets, to help on your missions, and thats only 1 of the cooles tthing you can do, besides online multiplayer, like capture the base and stuff. and the history

    Ultima Online... It was hardcore.

It was a 2d top down isometric view MMORPG.
You started off with only 100 gold, which bought nothing! You had crappy skills at the start which also made it hard. Asking for help from other players would fall on deaf ears. You were constantly dodging shady characters who wanted to steal your belongings. Then when you left town you were murdered, and your horse was killed. You lost everything in your bag, it's on your corpse which just got looted by the murderers. After running around as a ghost which seemed like forever, you get resurrected at the healers. When you finally got some armor and weapons to go kill some monsters you get murdered, and your horse was killed again. You're a ghost and you've just lost everything... again. It's a vicious cycle. FML

Now here's the fun part, when you persevered through the early days and built a good character you could go around owning people.
The game used skills instead of a class type, so you could pick any 7 skills and work them up to 100 to become a 7x GM. The game had player housing, guild wars, murdering, factions, thieving, crafting, ect. It had everything, you could even tame wild dragons which are strong as hell and sick them on people. You could be a real estate agent selling houses for millions. Crafting made tons of money. You could also farm plants for thorns. Buying bulk at the vendor then selling for high prices worked great, reagents are like crack for mages. A lot of people played the game just to sit around the bank and chat for the social interaction.

Thieving was incredibly awesome if you were a pro thief like me. You could steal anything that was under 10 stones, which was almost every weapon. Now apply a mage/thief into the equation. You can steal their healing reagent so they can't heal themselves, and start blasting spells at them while they are defenseless. I would steal in town which was insta kill by the guards. All awhile these extremely pissed off players would chase after me shouting the most offensive things as I hid and stealthed away. Only to use the disguise kit and come back as a totally different named player with a different outfit. Afterward, I proceeded to talk with them about the "thief" that they were looking for. Then I stole from them again, and again using the same technique.

I still have fond memories when I owned a boat full of murdering pirates with one spell. I had gm poisoning, and gm magery which made the spell "Poison field" deadly poison. They all panicked as their health was rapidly depleting and had no where to escape the poison field because they were on a small boat. Deadly poison is just like the name implies, it was deadly. I couldn't stop laughing from the hilarity of their situation. Every time they cured themselves they were re-poisoned and couldn't heal themselves because they were poisoned. After they all succumbed to the poison, I watched as five ghosts drove the boat away. They were probably in a state of shock, and bitching at each other. Outsmarted by a crafting character who was mining ore from the mountain side on his boat, who also dabbled in alchemy and poisoning.

The PVP was awesome back in those days, hally rush combos, necro/mage combos, and any other cool character builds. I even made a detective character just do it, he was anti-thief. PVP was a rush, because if you died you lost everything and the thrill of victory when you looted your opponent was all worth it. One time our pk group murdered this girl and her pet dragon in a dungeon. I felt so bad that I went and found her in the taming town. I ended up giving her a white wyrm (white dragon) with my tamer and showed her how to bond it so she'd never lose it again. I wasn't pure evil like most of the people that played the game, I actually helped people. I killed thieves and murderers mostly when I wasn't warring.

It was an incredible game during its time, the possibilities were endless. There was no endgame to it, it was purely an open sandbox. You quit the game because you were bored of the same thing, and moved on to newer games. But you didn't want to quit because you would lose everything you accomplished and acquired through your hard work. I ended up selling my account for a couple hundred dollars. It's still a fun game, if you played it originally. But I won't venture back into the fold...

Of course these games are interesting. They always take a lot of time though. If you're willing to invest a lot of time in a single game, then go for it. mmorpgs are more rewarding when you're playing together with friends. The social experience is what sells the game. If you don't want to pay for a subscription fee, then try Guild Wars. It's a one time buy with no subscription fees. There's also a lot of free mmos if you look for them. I'm waiting for Guild Wars 2, it looks epic.

Pyro hits the nail on the head when he mentions time investment. I've spend a lot of playtime in MMOs over the past 12 years. I also spent time in MUDs prior to that.

More and more, the MMO model is shifting toward Freemium payment plans. So I think Guild Wars II is a great place to start if you're looking to enter into a new genre like MMO.

Jumping in to an established game might leave you a little bit behind, but if you have friends to help you it's not a big deal.

To get anything out of these games, though, you *must* invest a lot of time to the game and your character. So understand that before you jump in. Also, if you can jump into the genre with some friends you'll find the learning curve to be a lot less intimidating. If you're going in solo, be sure that you're ready to be friendly, because you will need others to advance. That's pretty much the point of these games... to build communities to advance with.

    MMO's I've played to max level/end game:
    EverQuest
    EverQuest II
    Dark Age Of Camelot
    Ultima Online
    StarWars Galaxies
    Asheron's Call
    PlanetSide
    World of Warcraft
    Rift
    City of Heroes
    Age of Conan

Of those, EQ1, EQ2 and WoW were probably the ones I was most invested in. My favorite was EQ1, but I'd never go back to it now.
