Sticky Is UHDTV the Next Big Thing in HDTV?

Is UHDTV the Next Big Thing in HDTV?
With the 2011 CES on the horizon, we decided to check in on the status of some very impressive displays we saw at last year’s show. Large screen Ultra High Definition (UHD) displays with amazing images showing clear and sharp detail were on exhibit at some manufacturers’ booths including LG and Panasonic. This year we expect to see even more activity in this department but before anyone starts to worry that their brand new HDTV set is going to be obsolete anytime soon you can rest assured we probably won’t see UHD TVs in living rooms for another 10 years.

Will 2160p Be the New 1080p?
If you thought HDTV looked sharp and super realistic consider that 1920 x 1080 (1080p) will probably look like standard definition TV compared to UHD resolutions of 7680 x 4320 (8K) and 3840 x 2160 (4K). And if you thought 7.1 surround sound filled your room how about 22.2 surround sound? Before you ask how you will fit 22 speakers in your living room consider the idea that multiple speakers pointing in different direction could fit inside one enclosure. For example 5.1 speakers could turn into 22.2 with 4 speakers in each cabinet although they would have to be tall cabinets in order to create the three dimensional sound defined by the standard.

Recent Announcements Show Evidence of Movement
A couple of recent announcements from chip companies could be a sign that products might not be too far behind. Altera Corporation announced a single chip format converter that may help video processors like Vista System’s Spyder X20 provide dual 4K displays for a 3D UHD TV, while Silicon Image Inc. announced the cineramIC-3D/4K video decoder that could add another building block to a highly integrated 4K UHD TV or other 4K video gear.

    UHD Delivery Services
Where will the 4K content come from and how will it get to your TV? Those pieces are falling into place for example, the highly acclaimed Red One video camera can record 4K video at 30 fps. Getting 4K video into your home will probably take some advances in optical disc technology or fiber optics to the door which Verizon is actively trying to make happen with its FiOS network. In the meantime an up-scaled Blu-ray might look pretty good on a 4K TV set or on a screen from a 4K front projector.

How Soon Will it Be Here?
Rest assured, you can go out and buy that new 3D HDTV set without worrying about it becoming a dinosaur in the foreseeable future. Estimates on how soon we’ll be able to watch UHD at home vary but if the sea levels haven’t rise and the earth is still habitable you just might be watching the 19th season of House in UHD in 2022, possibly an earlier season in 2017. On the other hand, countries like Japan where public broadcaster NHK has been an early adopter of UHD, may see UHD TV sooner than some other countries like the United States.

You’ll See UHD TVs First on Retrevo
Retrevo will be ready to supply manuals and reviews for the latest UHD TVs whenever they come to market. In the meantime you can find reviews and manuals for all the latest gear and gadgets including laptops, cameras, HDTV and more.

Actually, I think UHDTV will be the next 1080p HDTV. It will replace 1080 as the old "standard" with the 4320p as the new standard. This is much different than 3D. This is about the next step in resolution history. The next step in realism. They even took a test on an 80" UHDTV and no matter how close you zoomed in on the image of the TV, you could NOT see any pixels... That's how sophisticated this TV will be. A Hi-Def TV without seeing pixels at all.. I could only image what playing games on it will look like..

Of course HDMI cables will be compatible. The same way composite cables are still possible to input on current HDTVs. If you have an HDMI cable connected to a UHDTV, you're obviously only going to get 1080p resolution and not the full 4320p resolution that a UHD Cable in the future will provide.
