HTC ThunderBolt To Be One of Verizon's First 4G Smartphones Empty HTC ThunderBolt To Be One of Verizon's First 4G Smartphones

An ad in this month's Rolling Stone magazine has given the world a sneak peek at the HTC ThunderBolt, an upcoming smartphone with support for Verizon's LTE network. The official unveiling of this 4G model isn't expected until tomorrow.

HTC has been dropping hints for weeks that it's about to announce a 4G device, and the one that has appeared most in rumors has gone under the code-name Thunderbolt or Mecha. At one point it was thought that this would ship as the HTC Droid Incredible HD, but apparently this company decided to go with the name HTC ThunderBolt.

This fact was revealed by a full-page ad from HTC for its 4G devices. This shows the already available T-Mobile G2 and Sprint's HTC EVO 4G, but the ThunderBolt is front and center.

The ad makes it clear that this device is headed for Verizon, but gives no other details on this upcoming smartphone.

    What the Rumors Say
Although HTC and Verizon have mostly been able to keep this model under wraps, quite a bit of information has leaked out already.

It will supposedly feature a 4.3-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) touchscreen, giving it an exceptionally large and high-resolution display.

Unconfirmed reports say it's going to run the Android OS on a dual-core 1.2 MHz processor from Qualcomm. If true, the ThunderBolt could be the first dual-core smartphone released.

Other features on the leaked specification list include an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera plus a front-facing camera for video conferencing.

In addition to LTE, it will almost certainly include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

Still, many details on the HTC ThunderBolt remain unknown, such as the amount of internal storage.

It will soon be one of several LTE-enabled smartphones from Verizon, as unconfirmed reports indicate that this carrier is also prepping 4G models from Samsung and Motorola. These are expected to be unveiled at an event on Thursday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
